WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS ABOUT SLEEPWEAR FABRIC

In the few sleep studies that compare fabrics, cotton did not come out ahead. Older adults fell asleep about twice as fast in merino wool as in cotton, and researchers pointed to how each fabric handles sweat. SERIS™ has not been tested in a sleep study yet, but independent lab tests show it moves moisture far better than cotton.

HISTORY OF MEN'S SLEEPWEAR

Pyjamas come from the Persian for "leg garment", a loose drawstring trouser worn across South Asia. They became standard men's sleepwear in Britain from around 1870 and peaked in the 1920s and 30s. Central heating and changing tastes ended their run in the 1960s and 70s, and the classic design has barely changed since.

THE BETTER MAN'S SLEEPWEAR GUIDE

Good sleepwear does three jobs: lets body heat escape, moves sweat off your skin and dries quickly, without irritating your skin over eight hours. Cotton absorbs sweat but releases it slowly, and polyester traps heat. Fine modal fibres such as SERIS™, and lyocell, do all three best.

WHICH FABRIC WORKS BEST FOR HOT SLEEPERS?

Look for a fabric that does three jobs: lets air through, moves sweat off your skin and dries quickly. Cotton and linen each fall short on one of these. Lyocell and fine modal fibres such as SERIS™ handle all three.

WHY DO MY PAJAMAS FALL APART?

Pyjamas wear out in four ways: pilling, thinning, losing their shape and fading. Short cotton fibres, cotton-polyester blends and cheap elastic are the main causes, and hot washes and tumble drying speed all four up. Longer, finer fibres and cool, gentle washing make sleepwear last much longer.
