REWIRING YOUR BRAIN TO BEAT INSOMNIA

Insomnia and sleep disruption — unsuited sleep blog

Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders. It makes it hard to fall asleep, stay asleep, or both. The result is non-restorative sleep that leaves you tired, unfocused, and irritable. When this happens three or more times a week for over three months, it’s classed as chronic insomnia.

Amazingly, about one-third of adults experience insomnia symptoms at any given time, and around 10% live with chronic insomnia.

Insomnia is a loop of thoughts and behaviours that teach your brain to resist sleep. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the proven way to break that loop and retrain your brain.

WHAT CBT-I IS?

CBT-I retrains how you think about sleep and how your body behaves around it. It’s structured, practical, and focused on rewiring habits that keep you awake.

Clinical studies show that CBT-I is the most effective long-term treatment for chronic insomnia. It outperforms sleeping pills for both duration and quality of results.

THE CORE IDEA

Insomnia feeds on two things: worry and routine. CBT-I dismantles both.

  • WORRY: Those anxious, pre-bed thoughts “What if I can’t sleep again?” tell your body to stay on alert. CBT-I teaches you to intercept them before they take over.
  • ROUTINE: Late caffeine, doom-scrolling, irregular bedtimes, condition your brain to expect wakefulness. CBT-I rebuilds cues so your body learns when to switch off.

THE PROCESS

A CBT-I programme usually lasts for 6 to 8 weeks and includes five core elements:

  1. SLEEP EDUCATION: You learn how sleep cycles work. Why timing, light, and temperature matter more than you think.
  2. SLEEP RESTRICTION: You temporarily limit your time in bed to build sleep pressure, helping your body relearn what tiredness feels like. As sleep efficiency improves, time in bed gradually increases.
  3. STIMULUS CONTROL: The bed becomes a place for sleep, not wakefulness. If you can’t sleep after 15–30 minutes, get up and do a quiet activity until you feel sleepy again. Wake at the same time every day, no matter how long you slept. Avoid naps.
  4. COGNITIVE RESTRUCTURING: You replace thoughts like “I’ll never fall asleep” with more realistic ones like “My body knows how to sleep.”
  5. SLEEP HYGIENE: Small changes help reinforce sleep quality by keeping your room cool, waking up at a consistent time, limiting alcohol and screen time before bed.

Each step works together to reset both your mindset and your body’s rhythm.

WHY IT WORKS

CBT-I restores trust in your body’s natural rhythm. Sure, medication can knock you out. But CBT-I teaches you to sleep naturally again.

A meta-analysis of 20 randomised trials showed that CBT-I improved sleep onset, quality, and duration. These benefits lasted for at least a year after treatment ended. People slept longer, woke less, and reported higher daytime energy.

It works because it rewires the association between bed and anxiety, turning the bedroom from a battleground into a signal for sleep.

THE PAYOFF

It’s not a quick fix. The first few weeks can feel harder before they get better. You’ll track sleep, set limits, and commit to consistency. But then something shifts.

Sleep starts to come without effort. You stop chasing it and start trusting it.

When you sleep properly, everything sharpens; mood, energy, focus, recovery.

If you’re struggling with sleep, take this quiz as a first step and start a conversation with your healthcare professional.

Good sleep is a learnable skill. Sometimes we just need a hand getting there.
